About this sheet
A valley below Monte Avila near Caracas, an original lithograph from Karl Martin's Bericht uber eine Reise nach Niederlandisch West-Indien, published at Leiden by E. J. Brill in 1888. The plate is lettered "Tab. XXI" at the upper right and is printed in gray with a buff tint stone.
A long, steep mountain ridge fills the left half of the picture and descends in shaded slopes toward the right, where lower hills continue into the distance. In front of it the valley floor is cultivated, with long parallel rows of crops across the foreground and middle ground, and a white farm building and a single tall slender tree stand at the foot of the slope. Palms and low trees mark the edge of the fields, and a few clouds drift in an otherwise open sky.
Monte Avila is the mountain wall that separates Caracas from the Caribbean coast. Martin, a professor of geology at Leiden, traveled in Venezuela as part of his expedition to the Dutch West Indies, and this view belongs to the group of landscape plates in his report.
