About this sheet
Nouveau Mexico, a copper engraving with a panoramic view of Mexico City, c.1760, engraved after Chedel. The title appears on a curling banner across the sky, and the lower right corner carries the volume mark "Tom. XII. N°. VI." with Chedel's name beside it.
The viewpoint looks across the city from rising ground. Beyond a few leafy trees and a church with a steep spire in the foreground, the city lies laid out in a regular grid of streets and blocks, divided by canals and crossed by a long arched causeway or aqueduct on the left. The lake stretches beyond, with sailing boats on the water and mountains and clouds along the horizon. A group of travelers with a laden mule and a few figures stand on the path in the foreground, and palms rise at the right.
Pierre Quentin Chedel (1705 to 1763) was a French etcher and engraver. The same view appears with a ruled frame in the Abbé Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages, which carries the same volume mark; this sheet is a trimmed copy without the frame, and its source work is not stated on the sheet itself.
