About this sheet
Two views of the island of Santa Catarina on the coast of Brazil, an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's voyage, Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The upper view is lettered in French and Dutch as the coast of the north east of the island of Ste. Catherine, and the lower view as the north entrance of the port of Ste. Catherine.
The upper panel shows a line of low, jagged hills along the horizon beneath a heavy cloud-filled sky, with a column of six ships of Anson's squadron sailing in line off the coast at the right. In the lower panel, the larger ships are in the foreground, one with a broad flag flying and a puff of cannon smoke, and the mountains of the island and the mainland are low behind them. The engraver, whose initials are in the lower right corner, used line shading to show the calm water.
Anson's squadron stopped at Santa Catarina in late 1740 to recruit and take on water before turning south for Cape Horn. The island, off the state of the same name, is now a popular holiday destination.
