About this sheet
The river and the harbor of San Julian on the coast of Patagonia, in an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's voyage, Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The two views are lettered "De Rivier van St.Juliaan, gelyk zy zich op drie opwaarts te zien, by laag Water" and "De Haven van Sint Juliaan", with a note that the island Goed Recht lies out to the mouth of the river.
The upper view shows a wide, calm stretch of water with a single small vessel under sail in the foreground, a long low shore beyond and distant hills at the right. A field with plowed-looking strips of land lies at the right. The lower view looks out across the harbor, where two small boats and a distant sail lie in a shallow, sandy basin. The shore is shown as a pale curved bank, with a low bar of land across the middle ground.
San Julian is a long-established natural harbor on the Argentine coast, and it was a regular stopping place for ships heading for the southern strait. The engraving shows it as seen at low water.
