About this sheet

This is an original antique copper engraving from 1776, plate LI of the first volume of Carsten Niebuhr's Voyage en Arabie, a folding plate with two views. The upper is captioned Gezigt der Stad Sués van de Z. Z. O. Zyde. and Vue de la Ville de Sués du Côté du S. S. E., the town of Suez seen from the south southeast. The lower is captioned Gezigt der Oude Stad Tôr van de Z. Z. W. Zyde. and Vue de l'Ancienne Ville de Tôr du Côté du S. S. O., the old town of Tor seen from the south southwest.

The upper view is a long, low panorama. The flat-roofed houses of Suez stretch across the middle distance, broken by minarets and a domed building toward the right, with a low hill at the far left. At the right a cluster of masts stands behind the town, two ships lie offshore and a row of arches closes the view. In the wide flat foreground a few small figures cross the shore. The lower view looks across the water to the ruined walls and buildings of Tor along the shore, with a gateway in the long wall, a few palm trees at the right and a range of mountains behind. In the left foreground a large three-masted ship flies a striped flag, with a smaller sailing boat beside it, and small craft lie along the shore to the right.

The lower margin is lettered Baurenfeind, del: at the left and C. J: de Huyser, fecit. at the right, naming the draftsman and the engraver. The plate number Tab. LI. is engraved at the upper right.

The plate belongs to the first volume of Niebuhr's Voyage en Arabie & en d'autres Pays circonvoisins, marked TOME PREMIER and Traduit de l'Allemand on its title page, which carries the imprint of S. J. Baalde at Amsterdam and J. van Schoonhoven and Comp. at Utrecht and the date MDCCLXXVI. The expedition's artist, Georg Wilhelm Baurenfeind, died at sea in 1763. The account was first published in German at Copenhagen; this is the French translation printed in Amsterdam and Utrecht.

Light uneven toning, browner toward the edges. Handling soiling along the top edge. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Folding plate, original center fold as issued. All four corners are present.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
