This hand-colored lithograph, titled “Street Musicians, Rome,” captures a vibrant and theatrical moment of everyday life in early 19th-century Italy. Created for a British audience and published in London on October 1, 1824, by William Sams, this print belongs to a series that romantically documents traditional costumes and local scenes from across Europe.
The image depicts a pair of Roman street performers in mid-performance. At the left, a young woman in a white blouse and a rose-colored apron over a blue-bordered skirt plucks a mandolin with visible enthusiasm. Her facial expression and posture suggest that she is singing or harmonizing with the music. Opposite her, a male companion dressed in rustic, weathered attire plays a small violin or fiddle. He wears tall grey-blue boots, purple trousers, and a bright green hat, with a brown cloak draped over his shoulders. His animated stance and interaction with the woman convey a sense of harmony and performance.
Behind them, the stone wall is inscribed with the phrase “Via Della Vita,” meaning “Street of Life,” an evocative detail that enhances the romantic, almost theatrical atmosphere of the composition. A woman passes by in the background carrying a bucket, adding to the realism of the Roman street scene. To the right, a worn stone block, perhaps a piece of ancient architecture, grounds the scene in historical Rome.
