Napoleon Crossing the Great St Bernard Pass – Alpine Campaign Engraving c.1840
This iconic 19th-century French engraving depicts one of the most celebrated episodes of Napoleon’s military legend: the crossing of the Great St Bernard Pass during the Italian campaign. Set against a dramatic alpine backdrop, the composition combines rugged mountain scenery with a carefully staged procession of soldiers, officers, and artillery, emphasizing endurance, leadership, and strategic resolve. Napoleon appears calmly authoritative amid the challenging terrain, embodying command and determination in the face of nature.

The composition is after a painting by Adolphe Roehn, a leading French historical painter renowned for his Napoleonic subjects. It was engraved by François for publication by Gavard in Paris as part of the Versailles series. While conceived as one plate within a larger cycle illustrating Napoleon’s career, this engraving stands confidently on its own and is widely regarded as one of the most visually compelling and decorative images of the series.
