About this sheet

The Hancock House in Boston, an original steel engraving of about 1830, lettered "Hancock House, Boston" in the decorative border below the view.

The house of John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence, stands in full elevation at the center, a stone Georgian mansion with a hipped roof, dormers, tall chimneys and a balcony over the central doorway. A low wall and iron gate separate it from the street, where a few figures walk in front. Tall bare trees stand beside it, and the sky is lightly clouded.

The view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage. An eagle with spread wings perches at the top, and the lower corners hold two small vignettes of Revolutionary subjects, at the left "Battle of Bunker's Hill, 1775" and at the right a mounted military group lettered "A Review". The mansion, built in 1737 on Beacon Hill, was demolished in 1863.
