About this sheet

A striking original eighteenth-century hand-colored engraving depicting Freiherr von Ruesch, commander of the famed Royal Prussian Black Hussars, one of the most recognizable cavalry regiments in European military history. The image portrays two mounted hussars in dramatic black uniforms adorned with the regiment's celebrated skull-and-crossbones insignia, the emblem that earned them the nickname Totenkopfhusaren or "Death's Head Hussars."

The engraved caption identifies the subject as:

"Freijherr von Ruesch. Obrister derer Königl. Preuss. Schwarze Husaren oder so genanter Todten Köpfe."

Colonel Wilhelm von Ruesch played a central role in establishing the reputation of the Black Hussars during the eighteenth century. Their distinctive black uniforms and skull insignia created one of the most memorable military images of the era and later inspired military traditions that continued well into the nineteenth century.

This engraving captures the regiment at full gallop, sabres drawn and horses in motion. The artist emphasizes the dramatic appearance of the skull emblems displayed on the riders' headgear and horse furniture. Contemporary hand coloring enhances the visual impact of the composition, bringing attention to the rich military costume details while preserving the print's historical authenticity.

Published by Johann Gottfried Böck (1720–1760), this engraving belongs to a rare series of military costume prints documenting the uniforms and officers of eighteenth-century European armies. Such prints were collected by military officers, aristocrats, and enthusiasts fascinated by the uniforms and organization of Europe's leading powers.

Today, original depictions of the Black Hussars are highly sought after by collectors of Prussian military history, cavalry subjects, equestrian art, and early military costume engravings. The combination of dramatic imagery, historical importance, and contemporary hand coloring makes this an especially desirable example.

The print possesses strong decorative appeal and displays beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. It is equally suited to a military collection, library, study, or equestrian-themed interior.

Condition Report:

Good antique condition consistent with age. Light age toning, scattered foxing, and minor wear to the margins. Contemporary hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

Framing Suggestions:

This engraving displays exceptionally well in an ebonized frame with gilt liner or a dark walnut frame with an ivory museum mat. The strong contrast of the black uniforms and skull insignia creates a dramatic focal point, making it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, offices, and collections devoted to military or equestrian subjects.

This offering is for an original eighteenth-century hand-colored engraving, not a modern reproduction. Any framed room visualizations are intended solely to illustrate potential display options and may not accurately represent the print's exact scale relative to the frame or interior setting. The print is sold unframed.
