This refined early eighteenth-century copper engraving originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s celebrated work *Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures*, published in London in 1721. Montfaucon’s monumental encyclopedia of classical antiquities became one of the foundational works of archaeology and art history, documenting ancient Roman and Greek objects, architecture, sculpture, inscriptions, and ceremonial arts from important European collections.
The engraving presents an elegant collection of classical ritual vessels, incense burners, ceremonial stands, bronze utensils, and antiquarian decorative objects inspired by ancient Roman domestic and religious life. Several pieces are accompanied by medallions and small narrative scenes illustrating their historical use and symbolic significance. Particularly striking are the finely engraved tripod vessels, ornamental burners, and sacred implements rendered with exceptional clarity and balance.
