About this sheet
Original antique map of New Zealand, a steel engraving colored by hand, with the lettered title "THE ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND". The map shows the North Island, the South Island and South or Stewart Island, with Cook Strait, Foveaux Strait and The Snares, and divides the land into provinces, among them New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago. Mount Egmont, Lake Taupo, the Southern Alps with Mount Cook, Banks Peninsula and Port Otago are named, along with many Maori place names. Province boundaries and coasts are outlined in yellow, the settlements are washed in red and the coasts carry a pale blue wash.
Below the title is a key of abbreviations, then "Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." and the note "Settlements colored red.", which explains the red patches at places such as New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin. A scale reads "English Miles 69 = 1 degree", the left border is marked "South Latitude" and the lower border "East of Greenwich". Below the border at left is the source line "ADMIRALTY, MANTELL &c.", and at center the imprint "London; Edward Stanford 6 Charing Cross". The plate number "29." stands in the right margin.
The Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography was published in London by Edward Stanford in 1858 and sold at Harrow by Crossley and Clarke, booksellers to Harrow School. Its maps were selected from those of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in London in 1826, which issued its maps in parts from 1829 and was wound up in 1848; Stanford later issued them under his own imprint, as this sheet shows. The sheet shows New Zealand divided into provinces, with the European settlements marked in red along the coasts and the interior of both islands still thinly named.
A clear map for a collection of Pacific or New Zealand maps.
Condition: Light handling wear to the top left corner; a small irregularity of a few millimeters to the left edge. Light, uneven toning. A few small foxing spots in the margin. A few small light flecks in the printed area. A center fold, as issued.
