Description: Antique print, titled: 'Carte des Isles des Amis.' Map of the Kingdom of Tonga, also known as the Friendly Islands, and one of the last hereditary monarchies. Cook named this group the Friendly Islands due to the generous reception he and his crew received on their journey. The route of Cook's ship, the Resolution, in 1774 is noted, with soundings, hazards, and anchorages. Four insets include the harbor of Tongataboo. A splendid compass rose orients the chart with north to the left. Source unknown, to be determined.
Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Rigobert Bonne' after 'Scattaglia'. Cartographer: Rigobert Bonne, (1727 - 1795), was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the French Depôt de la Marine. Engraved by Gaspard Andre.
