About this sheet

A frontier encounter in the American woods, a lithograph with hand color lettered "Mädchenraub am Red River" ("Kidnapping at the Red River"), dated 1868 in the plate. It carries the plate number 4 at the lower right.

In the foreground a Native American warrior at the left, in a feathered headdress, necklace and fringed loincloth with leggings, holds a long rifle across his body. At the right a bearded frontiersman in a straw hat, blue jacket and pale trousers crouches behind a tree with a club or rifle raised. Between them a young woman in a long dress steps out from behind the trunk. The scene is set under the spreading boughs of a large tree with a split trunk, in a green woodland.

The sheet is in the style of German illustrated popular fiction of the period, which set its adventure stories on the American frontier. The date of 1868 appears at the lower left of the image.
