Initially trained by his father, he later came under the tutelage of Bernard Picart in Amsterdam. He was also an excellent mezzotint engraver. On some of his plates he had help from his sister, miniature painter Anna Folkema. Taco Hajo Jelgersma (1702-1795) originated from Harlingen. He trained as a marine and portrait painter.
