This refined set of four original hand-colored engravings presents medieval and early Renaissance figures chosen for their strong visual contrast and expressive character. Each figure is isolated against a blank ground, creating a calm, museum-like presentation that translates beautifully into modern interiors.
The figures reflect different stages of life and social roles in Europe between the 13th and 15th centuries. One plate shows a young noblewoman in an elegant gown, her quiet gesture and patterned sleeves suggesting refinement and courtly manners. Another depicts a monk or religious scholar, dressed in a dark habit and holding a book, symbolizing learning, authority, and spiritual life. Produced in 1845 by Bonnard, these engravings belong to the 19th-century fascination with medieval costume, social history, and romanticized views of the past. Condition report:
Good antique condition. Light, even age toning consistent with mid-19th-century paper. Minor scattered foxing and small spots, mostly confined to the margins. Colors remain fresh and well preserved. Plate marks visible. No tears or losses.
Framing tips
These prints are not supplied framed. For best effect, frame all four identically. Dark wood or ebonized frames with warm ivory or parchment-colored mats enhance the period character. Display as a horizontal row or a balanced 2×2 grid.
