This attractive set of four original hand-colored engravings presents medieval and early Renaissance costume figures, idealized rather than individual portraits, and designed to be appreciated as a harmonious decorative group. Each figure stands isolated against a blank ground, giving the set a calm, gallery-like presence that works exceptionally well in contemporary interiors. Note: The engravings are not framed.
The figures represent different aspects of European life between the 13th and 15th centuries. A courtly male figure in fitted tunic and hose reflects refined urban or noble dress, while the armored figure with shield and spear evokes the martial world of knights and city guards. The two female figures wear flowing robes and veils typical of upper- and middle-class women, their controlled drapery and restrained poses conveying dignity, stability, and social order.
Produced in 1845 by Bonnard, these engravings belong to the 19th-century revival of interest in medieval history and costume. While historically informed, they were clearly composed with visual balance in mind: consistent scale, soft but confident coloring, and uncluttered compositions. This makes the set particularly appealing as wall art rather than purely illustrative material.
As a group, the four plates create a cohesive visual rhythm through their complementary colors—reds, blues, greens, and neutral tones—and their sculptural, statue-like poses. Condition report Good antique condition. Light, even age toning typical for mid-19th-century paper. Minor scattered foxing and small spots, largely in the margins. Colors remain fresh. Plate marks visible. No tears or losses.
Framing tips Frame all four uniformly for best effect. Dark wood or ebonized frames with warm ivory mats enhance the hand-coloring. Works well as a horizontal row or a balanced 2×2 grid.
