An original antique copperplate engraving titled "Habit of a Lady of Lima in Peru", depicting an elegantly dressed lady from colonial Lima. The engraving was published in London in 1779 as part of The New Universal Traveller by Jonathan Carver.
The print portrays a fashionable lady of Lima wearing an elaborate blue gown decorated with lace, jewellery and floral ornaments in her hair. She gracefully holds a rose, reflecting the refinement and elegance associated with the Creole society of Lima during the late eighteenth century.
During the colonial period, Lima was one of the wealthiest and most sophisticated cities in the Americas. European travellers frequently admired the city's elegant fashions, luxurious fabrics and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Costume plates such as this introduced readers to the distinctive dress and customs of distant cultures, becoming some of the earliest visual records of daily life in colonial Peru.
The graceful pose and carefully engraved costume make this an attractive example of eighteenth-century costume illustration. The delicate hand colouring enhances the richness of the dress while preserving the crisp detail of the engraving.
This engraving was published in Jonathan Carver's The New Universal Traveller, an important late eighteenth-century geographical work that combined descriptions of countries around the world with illustrations of their inhabitants, costumes and customs.
