The couple is presented beneath a finely engraved neoclassical architectural portal adorned with sphinxes, cherubs, classical urns, Greek key ornament, and richly sculptural decorative details. The gentleman wears a red frock coat with powdered wig, breeches, stockings, and carries a tricorne hat, while the lady is dressed in an elegant blue gown with black lace shawl, powdered coiffure, and floral accessories. Their attire reflects the refined fashions worn during the final years of the Ancien Régime.
Published in Paris by Rittner & Goupil, this print belongs to the celebrated Costumes du Quadrille Historique – Bals de l'Opéra series. Designed by Achille Devéria with ornamental borders by J.J. Grandville, the series was created for the celebrated historical costume balls held at the Paris Opéra.
