Byzantine Costume Study by Racinet, Imperial & Clerical Dress, 1888
This richly colored chromolithograph originates from the celebrated French publication Le Costume Historique by Albert Charles Auguste Racinet, published in Paris by Firmin-Didot & Cie between 1877 and 1888. Racinet’s monumental six-volume work remains one of the most important 19th-century visual encyclopedias of historical costume and decorative arts, admired for its scholarly precision and extraordinary use of color.
The plate illustrates a wide range of Byzantine figures, including emperors, saints, bishops, aristocrats, attendants, and courtly women, each dressed in elaborate ceremonial garments characteristic of the Byzantine Empire. The composition presents a fascinating overview of Byzantine textile culture, religious vestments, and imperial symbolism, with richly patterned robes, jeweled crowns, embroidered tunics, and ecclesiastical attire rendered in exquisite detail.
