North African Costumes Algeria, Racinet Afrique Chromolithograph, 1888
A richly colored and finely detailed chromolithograph from 1888, taken from Albert Charles Auguste Racinet’s celebrated publication Le Costume Historique, issued in Paris by Firmin Didot. Titled “Afrique,” this plate presents a refined study of traditional North African costume, with a particular focus on Algeria and its diverse cultural groups.
The composition combines portrait-style studies with full-length figures, illustrating a range of identities including Moorish women, Arab men, and Jewish women. Each figure is carefully rendered to highlight distinctive garments, headwear, and hairstyles, emphasizing regional variation and social identity. The upper register presents close studies of male figures, while the lower section expands into more elaborate costume depictions, showcasing layered textiles, decorative embroidery, and characteristic silhouettes.
Racinet’s work is widely regarded as one of the most important visual encyclopedias of global costume, combining ethnographic observation with refined artistic composition.
