Burmese Nobleman & Noblewoman Costume Prints, Hand-Colored Pair, 1854
This attractive pair of antique hand-colored costume engravings depicts members of the Burmese upper class, presented in richly detailed traditional attire. The prints portray a nobleman and noblewoman of Burma (Myanmar), each elegantly dressed in ceremonial garments that reflect the refinement and visual splendor associated with Southeast Asian courtly culture during the 19th century.
The first print, titled “Marama of Birman uit den aanzienlijken stand,” shows a Burmese nobleman standing in flowing robes of deep crimson, turquoise, gold, and black, carrying a decorative parasol over his shoulder. His richly layered costume and distinctive headdress reflect the status and sophistication of the Burmese elite. The companion print, “Birmansche vrouw uit den aanzienlijken stand,” depicts a noblewoman gracefully holding a fan while dressed in elaborately patterned robes highlighted in soft pink, blue, white, and gold tones. Her elegant pose and refined costume create an especially decorative composition.
Together, the two prints form a highly appealing ethnographic pair, illustrating the fascination with Asian cultures found in European costume publications and travel accounts of the period.
