Van Diemen Landers – Antique Hand-Colored Engraving of Aboriginal Tasmanians (c.1800)
An early 19th-century hand-colored ethnographic engraving featuring a family group of Aboriginal Tasmanians, titled “Van Diemen Landers.” The scene depicts an adult man seated beneath a tree, a standing woman carrying a woven basket of gathered food, and a young child in the foreground. The landscape behind them suggests the rugged terrain of Van Diemen’s Land — the historical European name for Tasmania.

This engraving reflects the European attempts to document Indigenous Tasmanian peoples during the age of exploration. Today, prints from this period hold significant historical importance due to the impact of colonization and the near-erasure of the island’s original communities in the 19th century. The composition offers visual details including traditional scarification patterns, baskets, and coastal foraging activities.
