About this sheet
An original antique steel engraving, uncolored, of peoples of the Caucasus, captioned "CIRCASSIENS" above and "MARCHAND ARMÉNIEN" and "ABAZE" below. The upper vignette shows a Circassian warrior in a pointed helmet and mail, a long gun over his shoulder and a curved sword at his hip, while behind him a rider wrapped in a heavy cloak sits on a slender horse. On the right a young woman in a long open coat over wide trousers rests her hand on a wooden rail beside a small tree. In the lower vignette an Armenian merchant in a tall cap and a long coat carries a bundle under his arm, with a walled town behind him, and beside him a man with a shaven head and a topknot sits on a rock, cartridge holders across his chest and a gun in a fur case over his shoulder.
The captions translate as Circassians, Armenian merchant and Abaza. The publisher's line at the foot reads "Publié par Furne, à Paris" (Published by Furne, in Paris), and in small letters at the lower right corner of the lower image the printer's line reads "Imp. Delamain, 8, r. Git-le-Cœur, Paris." A faint signature at the lower left of the upper image is lost in the shading and cannot be read, and the captions name no artist or engraver.
The plate comes from Voyage en Asie et en Afrique by MM. Eyriès and Alfred Jacobs, published in Paris by Furne et Cie, éditeurs, of 45 rue Saint-André-des-Arts, with a title page dated M DCCC LIX (1859). The volume belongs to the Histoire générale des voyages, issued under the names of Dumont d'Urville, d'Orbigny, Eyriès and A. Jacobs, a French collection of travel accounts illustrated with steel engravings and captioned in French.
The costume detail makes it a good choice for a collection on the Caucasus or on the history of arms and dress.
