A dramatic and highly decorative antique lithograph depicting the Arabian stallion “Aleppo,” published in Stuttgart in 1846 as part of August Jäger’s renowned equestrian work Das orientalische Pferd (“The Oriental Horse”). Unlike many static equestrian portraits of the period, this composition captures the horse in an animated, spirited pose with raised forelegs, accompanied by a partially visible handler, creating a striking sense of movement and vitality.
The lithograph was issued by the Stuttgart publisher G. Ebner, whose imprint appears in the lower right margin. The notation “I. Lfg. 5.” indicates this plate formed part of the fifth issue in the first installment of the series. Das orientalische Pferd is among the notable 19th-century European publications dedicated to the study and admiration of Arabian and Oriental horse breeds, reflecting the fascination these animals inspired among aristocratic breeders, military circles, and collectors throughout Europe.
The Arabian horse has long been regarded as one of the world’s most refined and influential breeds. Carefully developed by Bedouin tribes for endurance, intelligence, loyalty, and speed, Arabian bloodlines later became foundational in the development of numerous modern horse breeds, including the Thoroughbred. Their elegant heads, arched necks, and proud carriage made them highly sought after during the 18th and 19th centuries.
