Antique Botanical Lithographs – Gasteria, Aloe & Yucca – 1897
A vibrant set of three chromolithographs from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse (1897) by Edward Step, featuring striking succulent and desert flora. Plate 270 presents Gasteria verrucosa, with its mottled, fleshy leaves and tubular red-green flowers. Plate 271 illustrates the Tree Aloe (Aloe arborescens), a dramatic species with spiny foliage and brilliant scarlet flower spikes. Plate 272 depicts Silk Grass (Yucca filamentosa), highlighting its sword-like leaves and large creamy-white blossoms. These illustrations combine scientific precision with artistic beauty, capturing plants popular in late-Victorian horticulture for their exotic appearance and resilience.
