A rare and visually refined set of five antique botanical chromolithographs depicting alpine cushion plants and high-mountain flora, including species of Aretia and Douglasia. Originating from a late 19th-century European botanical publication, these prints capture the distinctive character of alpine vegetation adapted to extreme conditions in the Austrian, Swiss, and Tyrolean Alps.
Each composition presents a single specimen isolated against a softly toned background, emphasizing the compact, sculptural growth forms typical of alpine cushion plants. The dense clusters of blossoms—ranging from soft whites and delicate pinks to vivid yellow—contrast beautifully with the muted paper tones, creating a calm and elegant visual rhythm across the set. The detailed rendering of roots, foliage, and flowering structures reflects both scientific precision and artistic sensitivity, characteristic of high-quality chromolithography of the period.
The plates include Douglasia vitaliana (Goldprimel) and several Aretia species such as Aretia imbricata, Aretia Hausmanni, Aretia alpina, and Aretia helvetica, each accompanied by Latin identification and German captions describing their alpine habitats. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning. Some light edge wear and minor irregularities from original binding, including slight roughness along the left margins. Occasional faint spotting consistent with age. Colors remain soft yet well preserved. No major damage.
Framing tips: These prints are best presented with generous ivory or off-white mats and thin dark walnut or ebonized frames. A symmetrical arrangement enhances their sculptural qualities—either in a horizontal line or a balanced salon-style grouping. Particularly suited to alpine, rustic-luxury, or natural-toned interiors.
