This finely rendered botanical engraving depicts Myrtus Pimenta, commonly known as allspice or pimento, a spice plant native to the Caribbean and Central America. The plate originates from Jonathan Carl Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde, a work devoted to the natural history of globally traded plants. Allspice held particular importance as a versatile commodity, valued for its culinary, medicinal, and preservative properties, and widely exported to European markets.
