Antique Date Palm & Coconut Botanical Scene, Phoenix & Cocos, c.1831
This richly illustrated botanical scene depicts the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) and coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) within a tropical landscape, including human figures harvesting fruit. Unlike purely analytical plates, this composition combines botany with ethnographic context.
Issued in Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde, the plate reflects European fascination with tropical agriculture and colonial production systems.
Original hand coloring is lively and atmospheric, making this one of the most decorative plates in the entire series.
