This stunning hand-colored engraving, titled "Crinon barbu, mâle," is a remarkable example of early 19th-century ornithological artistry and scientific documentation. Created under the direction of Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858), this work belongs to his publication *Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers*, which was issued between 1806 and 1808. The detailed illustrations were executed by Jean-Gabriel Prêtre, a renowned artist known for his precise and lifelike depictions of exotic bird species.
This print features the bearded barbet, a striking bird with deep green plumage, an intricate feather pattern, and a distinctive yellow and black throat adorned with bristly whiskers. Perched on a finely detailed branch, the bird’s natural posture and exquisite hand-colored details give it a lifelike presence. A small anatomical study of the bird’s beak is also included, a feature commonly seen in scientific ornithological prints of this period.
The engraving was produced using copperplate printing, a highly skilled process where an image was etched onto a metal plate, inked, and then transferred to high-quality paper. Each print was then meticulously hand-colored with watercolors, ensuring rich color depth and individual uniqueness. These ornithological prints were valued not only as scientific documentation but also as decorative artworks, often displayed in elegant interiors or collected by scholars and natural history enthusiasts.
