The print originates from the refined Swedish natural history series Svenska Fåglar Efter Naturen Och På Sten Ritade (“Swedish Birds Drawn from Nature and Rendered on Stone”), published in Sweden in 1929 by A. Börtzells. The series represents an important example of early 20th-century Nordic natural history illustration, where scientific accuracy is combined with a calm and decorative visual style characteristic of Scandinavian design.
The composition portrays the Bittern standing alert among marsh grasses, its body held upright with the head tilted upward — a posture typical of the species when blending into reeds. This behavior, often called the “bittern pose,” allowed the bird to remain nearly invisible in wetland habitats.
