About this sheet

Set of 6 Dutch Portrait Engravings, Houbraeken after Visscher, Leiden 1574
A fine and historically significant set of six Dutch portrait engravings, depicting key figures connected to the Siege of Leiden in 1574, one of the most iconic events of the Dutch Revolt. These portraits originate from the well-known series “Hollandsche Portraiten,” engraved by J. Houbraken after earlier prints by C. Visscher and published by C. Meyer.

The set includes the following figures: Jonckvr. Magdalena Moons; Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werf, Burgomaster of Leiden; Johan van der Does, Heer van Noordwijk; Don Francisco de Valdez, Spanish commander during the siege; Lodewijk van Boisot, Admiral of the Sea Beggars; and Jan van Hout, Secretary of Leiden. Together, they form a compelling visual narrative of both the Dutch defenders and the Spanish opposition.

Each engraving is executed in the refined and highly detailed manner for which Jacob Houbraken is renowned, with delicate line work, strong tonal contrast, and elegant oval portrait framing. The engraved captions beneath each portrait provide historical identification, enhancing their documentary value. Houbraken’s work, based on earlier prints by Claes Jansz. Visscher, reflects the 18th-century Dutch interest in national history and the celebration of heroic figures from the Eighty Years’ War.

The prints are bound together in a contemporary paper binding, preserving the set as originally issued or collected. This adds to their historical integrity and makes them particularly appealing for collectors who value original groupings rather than later assembled sets.

Visually, the consistency of format and subject matter makes this set ideal for display as a cohesive group, while also offering the flexibility to frame individually if desired. The subject matter, craftsmanship, and historical importance combine to make this an attractive acquisition for collectors of Dutch history, portrait engravings, or early modern European prints.

Condition:
Overall in good condition for age. Light toning and occasional foxing to the paper, with some minor handling wear. The engravings remain sharp with strong impressions. Bound in a simple paper binding, showing wear, rubbing, and age-related imperfections, but structurally intact.

Framing tips:
Can be displayed as a complete bound set for collectors, or individually framed in a symmetrical arrangement (2 x 3). Dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats will enhance the contrast and give a museum-quality presentation.

Note: All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and are not always on scale.
