Antique Greek Lidded Amphora with Classical Figures Lithograph, 1883
Original antique color lithograph depicting an elaborate ancient Greek lidded amphora with classical figures and detailed archaeological studies, published in Berlin in 1883 as part of Albert Genick’s monumental work on Greek ceramics.
This impressive landscape-format plate presents an unusual and highly architectural amphora at left, accompanied by detailed studies of its construction and decoration at right.
The principal vessel is distinguished by a complex lid surmounted by a smaller decorated vessel and several tall vertical finials. The small upper vessel carries a winged figural scene, adding another layer of decoration to the already elaborate composition.
The body of the amphora is decorated in the characteristic black and terracotta-red palette of ancient Greek pottery. Its principal scene depicts three classical figures arranged around a central seated female figure. A small winged figure appears above, extending an object or wreath toward the group. Palmettes flank the scene, while a geometric Greek-key meander border runs beneath it.
The right half of the plate is devoted to archaeological studies of the vessel. These include a precise profile drawing of the elaborate lid and handle construction together with a large circular detail showing its ornamental design. The combination of a fully rendered vessel with technical drawings reflects both the scholarly purpose and exceptional graphic quality of Genick’s publication.
The unusual lidded form, rich figural decoration and generous landscape composition make this one of the particularly interesting plates from the series and an attractive decorative work in its own right.
The print originates from the second edition of Albert Genick’s important publication on Greek ceramics, published by Ernst Wasmuth in Berlin in 1883. The complete work comprised 36 color lithographic plates, including four double-page plates, illustrating amphorae, vases, bowls and other examples of ancient Greek ceramic art.
The lithographs were produced by the Berlin printing establishment Hein & Mosler. Albert Genick (1837–1906), a Berlin-trained architect, became particularly known for his precise graphic documentation of ancient ceramics. This publication is regarded as his principal work. Complete examples are rare, and individual plates from the series are increasingly difficult to find.

Condition:
Very good antique condition. Strong black and terracotta coloring with the fine figural, ornamental and archaeological details remaining well preserved. Light age-related toning with scattered foxing and spotting, principally visible in the margins and surrounding background. Minor wear and slight irregularity along the sheet edges consistent with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
