18th Century Male Nude Academic Figure Study after Gérard de Lairesse c1745
Description
This finely engraved academic figure study depicts a muscular male nude posed in contrapposto, leaning against a block with one arm raised to the head. The composition exemplifies the classical ideals of proportion, anatomy, and expressive posture that defined academic art training in the late Baroque and early Enlightenment period.
The print is engraved after designs by Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711), one of the most influential theorists and painters of the Dutch and German Baroque. Lairesse’s figure studies were widely used as teaching models for artists, sculptors, and draughtsmen across Europe. This plate originates from the German edition of *Principes de dessin*, published circa 1745, which is scarcer than the earlier French issues and later 19th-century reprints.
The figure is rendered with exceptional clarity, emphasizing musculature, balance, and anatomical accuracy. The restrained background and strong directional lighting focus attention entirely on the human form, reflecting the didactic purpose of the series. Such plates were fundamental tools in academies and workshops and are today sought after by collectors of Old Master prints, academic drawing material, and classical figurative art.

Condition
Good antique condition. Original laid paper with even age-related toning. Minor scattered spotting and light surface dirt, mainly in the margins. Small edge wear and softening consistent with age. The engraved image remains strong and well-defined. Plate impression visible. No major tears or losses.
Framing tips
This print frames beautifully in a simple black, dark walnut, or ebonized frame. A wide off-white or light grey mat enhances the classical character and emphasizes the sculptural quality of the figure. Museum glass is recommended to preserve the paper and reduce reflections.
