Titled “Constructions des Castors” (Beaver Constructions), the scene depicts several beavers along the rocky shore of a river or lake, surrounded by rugged cliffs and dense forest. A prominent dam built from branches and logs can be seen in the center, stretching from the shoreline into the water, while one beaver stands upright in the foreground and others move across the muddy bank or wade into the water. The peaceful composition emphasizes both the industrious nature of these animals and the untamed beauty of the Canadian wilderness.
The plate is marked “Lemaitre direxit,” identifying it as the work of 19th-century French engraver Lemaitre. It was likely published around 1850 as part of a European visual compendium of Canadian life, geography, and culture. Unlike many other engravings in the same series that focus on cities or human settlements, this plate centers exclusively on wildlife and natural engineering, offering an early and respectful depiction of beavers in a landscape that is both realistic and evocative.
The beaver holds particular significance in Canadian history—not only as a symbol of industriousness and survival but also as the central figure in the fur trade that shaped much of North America's early colonial economy.
