Set of Two Primaticcio Fontainebleau Fresco Engravings by Baltard, 1803
This elegant pair of original antique copperplate engravings reproduces a series of fresco medallions designed by the celebrated Italian Mannerist master Francesco Primaticcio (1504–1570) for the Salle de Festin (Banquet Hall) of the Château de Fontainebleau. Each plate presents six finely engraved oval and rectangular compositions depicting mythological figures, allegorical scenes, and classical narratives that formed part of one of the most celebrated decorative interiors of the French Renaissance.
Originally executed during the sixteenth century for King Francis I, Primaticcio's decorative program helped establish the Fontainebleau School, blending Italian Renaissance ideals with French courtly taste. These engravings preserve the delicate compositions and expressive figures with remarkable clarity, making them valuable records of one of France's greatest artistic achievements.
The engravings were created by the distinguished French architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846) and published in Paris in 1803 as part of the monumental Napoleonic-era publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés. This landmark work documented France's most important monuments and decorative interiors through meticulously executed copperplate engravings.
Together, the two prints form a highly decorative and historically significant set, ideal for collectors of Renaissance art, French architectural engravings, classical mythology, and interior decoration.
