Renaissance Wind Cosmology Woodcut with Globe & Elemental Winds, 1590
This striking late 16th-century German woodcut page originates from an early encyclopedic or natural-philosophical publication titled Teutsche Speiskammer (“German Pantry”), a richly illustrated work exploring the natural world, the four elements, food, animals, and the forces governing human life and nature. The sheet is headed Von dem Lufft vnd Winden (“On Air and Winds”) and centers around a remarkable allegorical diagram of the winds surrounding a terrestrial globe.
The elaborate woodcut illustrates personified wind deities radiating around the earth within a circular cosmological framework naming the directional winds in German. Around the central globe appear expressive human faces exhaling powerful gusts of wind, reflecting Renaissance understandings of meteorology and the elemental structure of the universe. The imagery combines scientific curiosity, medieval cosmology, and artistic imagination in a highly decorative composition typical of German Renaissance printing.
The typography is executed in bold blackletter, accompanied by an ornate historiated initial and dense columns of early German text discussing the nature of air and movement.
