About this sheet

An original antique lithograph, hand colored, from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows a broad waterfall dropping in several stages over pink brown rock ledges patched with green moss, fir trees on the crest and along the slopes and spray rising at the foot. The lower image shows three women: on the left a young woman of Schwyz seated on a stool, knitting, in a large fan shaped lace headdress trimmed with roses, a yellow kerchief, white blouse, green skirt and pink apron; in the center a woman seen from behind with a baby carried on her back, in a white lace bonnet, pink shawl, blue skirt and striped apron, raising her hand as she talks; and on the right a girl in an orange bodice and blue striped apron with her hands clasped.

The top margin is lettered "Tav. 61", "SVIZZERA" and "Tom IV". Under the upper image: "Cascata di Staubach" (Staubbach Falls). Under the lower image: "Giovane cittadina di Switz. Donna e ragazza di Altorf" (Young townswoman of Schwyz. Woman and girl of Altdorf).

The Staubbach Falls drop from a cliff into the Lauterbrunnen valley in the Bernese Oberland and were already a famous sight for travelers by the early nineteenth century. Schwyz and Altdorf are the chief towns of the cantons of Schwyz and Uri in central Switzerland.

The pairing of an Alpine view with costume makes the plate a natural fit for a chalet style room or a gift for someone who loves Switzerland.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
