About this sheet
An original antique steel engraving, uncolored, with two Moroccan views, captioned "MAROC" above and "GRANDE PLACE DE TÉTOUAN" with "VUE DU QUARTIER DES JUIFS" below. The upper vignette shows a tall square minaret with decorated panels and a small lantern at the top, rising above white domed buildings, with a second minaret, palm trees and jagged mountains behind. In the foreground a man sits on a rock, and on the right a man at a fountain fills a jar. The lower vignette looks down from the flat roofs of the Jewish quarter onto the great square of Tetouan, where horsemen gallop through puffs of smoke before a crowd. Women and men stand and sit on the terraces in the foreground, and the town and a walled fortress climb the hill beyond.
The captions translate as Morocco and Great square of Tetouan, seen from the Jewish quarter. The publisher's line at the foot reads "Publié par Furne, à Paris" (Published by Furne, in Paris). In small letters at the lower right corner of the lower image the printer's line reads "Imp. Delamain, 8, r. Git-le-Cœur, Paris.", and just above it the plate is signed "alp. Boilly", the signature of Alphonse Boilly.
The source is Voyage en Asie et en Afrique by MM. Eyriès and Alfred Jacobs, a volume of the Histoire générale des voyages by Dumont d'Urville, d'Orbigny, Eyriès and A. Jacobs. It was published in Paris by Furne et Cie, éditeurs, 45 rue Saint-André-des-Arts, and its title page is dated M DCCC LIX (1859). Like the other plates in the book, this one is a steel engraving with a French caption.
The rooftop view of a festive crowd gives this plate a strong sense of place for a collection on Morocco.
