Antique View of Nottingham with Castle – Walpoole British Traveller, 1784
This finely engraved 18th-century copperplate view presents a panoramic prospect of the historic English town of Nottingham, prominently featuring Nottingham Castle rising above the surrounding landscape. Titled “An Accurate View of the Town of Nottingham, with the Castle, &c.”, the print was produced for George Augustus Walpoole’s *The New and Complete British Traveller*, one of the late 18th century’s most popular illustrated geographical surveys of Britain.
The composition offers a wide, carefully structured landscape view across the countryside toward the town. In the distance, the skyline of Nottingham unfolds with church towers, clustered houses, and civic buildings forming a dense urban silhouette. Most striking is Nottingham Castle, dramatically positioned on its rocky outcrop at the left of the scene. The elevated site of the castle had long made it one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Midlands, dominating the surrounding valley and serving as both a defensive stronghold and a symbol of regional authority.
In the foreground the engraver has included small groups of elegantly dressed figures strolling across the pastoral fields, while livestock graze peacefully nearby. These staffage figures add scale and life to the composition while emphasizing the contrast between rural tranquility and the distant urban settlement. Such elements were typical of 18th-century topographical engravings, which often blended documentary accuracy with the aesthetic ideals of the picturesque landscape tradition.
The entire view is enclosed within a richly decorated ornamental border composed of geometric motifs and medallions, a stylistic feature commonly used in travel books of the period. At the top margin the plate is inscribed “Engraved for Walpoole’s New & Complete British Traveller,” identifying the source publication. At the bottom the imprint records that the print was published in London by Alex Hogg at the King’s Arms, Paternoster Row, in May 1784. Hogg was a prolific London publisher responsible for many illustrated travel and historical works during the late Georgian era.
Topographical prints such as this played an important role in shaping how British towns and landscapes were perceived by readers of the time. Published just before the rapid urban transformation of the Industrial Revolution, the engraving offers a valuable visual record of Nottingham’s appearance in the late 18th century, when the town still retained much of its traditional character.
Today the print appeals to collectors of British topography, Georgian engravings, and historic city views. Its combination of architectural detail, decorative engraving, and documentary value makes it both historically interesting and highly decorative when displayed.
Condition: Good condition for age with general age-related toning and some scattered spotting, mainly visible in the margins. The engraved image remains clear with strong impression. Small tears in upper margin. Blank verso.
Framing tips: This panoramic print frames particularly well in a dark walnut or black frame with a wide ivory mat. The elongated format lends itself beautifully to horizontal display, making it an elegant addition to libraries, hallways, or interiors featuring historic British themes.
