About this sheet
A wagon train at rest in a high desert landscape, an original steel engraving of the 1850s from Meyer's Universum, lettered in German "Landschaft bei der Furth über den Read River". The sheet carries the Bibliographisches Institut imprint of Hildburghausen and a Roman-numeral page number at the upper right.
In the foreground, at the edge of a rocky rise, a group of settlers sits and stands in conversation beside two covered wagons, with pack animals and horses at the left and smoke from a campfire at the right. The ground falls away to a broad valley with a river or lake, and flat-topped mesas and eroded buttes stand across the plain. A line of low mountains lies beyond, with one snow-covered peak showing at the horizon. A small tree and ferns frame the left edge.
The earlier description places the scene in what is now New Mexico, but the river is lettered "Read River" and no state appears on the plate.
