This rare and visually engaging set of four hand-colored copperplate engravings originates from Giulio Ferrario’s celebrated early nineteenth-century publication Le Costume Antico e Moderno, one of the most ambitious illustrated surveys of world cultures, customs, and daily life produced during the Enlightenment era. Engraved by Luigi Giarre and published in Italy in 1815, these plates illustrate scenes of agricultural labor and rural technology, presenting European audiences with detailed interpretations of traditional Chinese farming practices and rural livelihoods.
