About this sheet
A quiet view on the edge of The Hague, set in an oval vignette beneath a crowned coat of arms held by two rampant lions. A grassy towpath stretches between two stretches of water toward an iron bridge, where a cluster of figures stands at the far end. On the right, men work beside a moored boat at the water's edge, and a couple stands talking on the path in the foreground.
Behind the bridge the town opens out: red-roofed houses, a large white building and a tall factory chimney trailing smoke, with church towers and domes on the skyline at left and a flagpole rising at right. Willows and full trees soften the scene, and the sky is washed with gray cloud.
The title is lettered in two languages, 's Gravenhage at left and La Haye at right, the Dutch and French names of The Hague. The line at lower right reads that the print was printed and published (gedrukt en uitgegeven) by A.P. van Langenhuijsen in The Hague, a lithographic printer and publisher working in the city. The chimney and the iron bridge give the view an unusually modern note for a Dutch town print of its period.
This is a lithograph, printed in black and colored by hand in soft greens, yellows, blues and rose, with the color applied lightly over the drawn tones.
A charming Dutch townscape that would brighten a hallway or a bedroom, especially framed in pale wood with a generous mat around the vignette.
Condition: Light wear to the bottom right, bottom left and top right corners. Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. Printed image clean.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
