This rare and visually cohesive group of five original 18th-century engravings depicts funerary monuments in Westminster Abbey, one of the most important sites of royal, political, and cultural memory in England. The prints were engraved by George Vertue (G. Vertue, sc.), after designs by Hubert-François Gravelot, and date to around circa 1730.
The series depicts the tombs and effigies of English medieval royalty, including King Edward III, Edward the Black Prince, and related royal monuments in Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral.
Each engraving presents a different monument or tomb, rendered with great architectural precision and theatrical framing. The compositions emphasize Gothic and early Renaissance funerary architecture—canopied tombs, recumbent effigies, heraldic shields, sculptural niches, and inscribed pedestals—set within elaborate Rococo borders. These frames, rich in scrollwork, cartouches, and allegorical ornament, reflect Gravelot’s influence and the taste of early Georgian England for refined French design.
George Vertue, one of the most important English engravers and antiquarians of the period, was renowned for his documentary accuracy and crisp line work. His engravings preserve not only the sculptural details of the monuments but also their spatial context within Westminster Abbey. Gravelot’s designs add elegance and narrative clarity, making the series both historically informative and visually refined.
The engravings originate from a coherent series devoted to architectural and sculptural monuments (“Baudenkmale”), printed on laid paper with visible watermark. All five impressions are uniform in size, approximately 35.8 × 21.5 cm (14.1 × 8.5 inches), and are presented in matching passe-partout mounts, creating a ready-made set suitable for display. Together, they form an exceptional ensemble illustrating early 18th-century attitudes toward memory, monarchy, and monumental art.

Condition report:
All five engravings are in good, consistent condition. Light age-related toning and minor surface wear. Printed on laid paper with watermark. Each mounted in a passe-partout. No major losses or tears observed.
Framing tips:
The prints work best framed as a horizontal or vertical suite. Use matching frames in dark wood or black with light ivory mats to emphasize the architectural detail and unify the set.
