Uppsala St Eriks Torg Cathedral View, Swedish Tinted Lithograph by A. Nay, 1877
This finely executed nineteenth-century tinted lithograph titled “Upsala. S:t Eriks torg” was drawn and lithographed by A. Nay and published in Stockholm in 1877 as part of the illustrated work Upsala, accompanied by descriptive text by S. Nordström. The composition presents a lively urban view centered on St. Erik’s Square, capturing the historic heart of Uppsala with its cathedral architecture, civic buildings, and animated street life. The twin towers of Uppsala Cathedral rise prominently above the surrounding structures, emphasizing both the architectural grandeur and the cultural significance of the site.
Nay’s lithographic style combines architectural precision with atmospheric tonal treatment. The subtle tinted colouring lends warmth and depth to the scene, creating a soft, silvery light characteristic of Scandinavian lithography from the late nineteenth century.
