This finely executed original antique copperplate engraving depicts the Upper Mall (Partie supérieure du Mail) in the celebrated Park of the Château de Saint-Cloud. The composition presents a broad tree-lined promenade bordered by elegant park buildings, creating a tranquil scene that reflects the refined landscape design of one of France's greatest royal estates.
The engraving beautifully captures the ordered geometry of the formal avenue, with towering rows of mature trees leading the eye into the distance while visitors stroll through the grounds. Baltard's delicate rendering of light, foliage, and architecture creates an atmosphere of serenity and grandeur that made the gardens of Saint-Cloud famous throughout Europe.
The Château de Saint-Cloud served as a favored residence of the Bourbon monarchy before becoming one of Napoleon Bonaparte's principal palaces. Its magnificent gardens, formal avenues, fountains, and landscaped park were regarded among the finest examples of French garden design until the palace was destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.
The engraving was created by the distinguished French architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard (1764–1846) and published in Paris in 1803 as part of the celebrated Napoleonic-era publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés. This monumental work documented France's architectural and landscape heritage through meticulously engraved copperplates of exceptional artistic and technical quality.
