Turkish Religious Scholar Antique Ottoman Costume Lithograph c.1852
This refined nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Turksch Priester,” or Turkish religious scholar, portrayed in traditional Ottoman dress. The figure is shown standing in a dignified pose while holding a string of prayer beads, reflecting the importance of religious learning and spiritual authority within the Ottoman Empire.
The subject wears an imposing white turban, one of the most recognizable symbols of Ottoman religious and scholarly rank. Combined with the flowing robe and layered garments beneath, the costume conveys both dignity and social standing. Throughout the Ottoman world, religious scholars, teachers, jurists, and clerics played central roles in community life, education, and the administration of religious law. European artists and publishers frequently included such figures in costume albums as representatives of the diverse social classes and professions of the empire.
