About this sheet

Rome Church Interior – Santa Maria degli Angeli, Benoist 1869

This monumental interior view shows the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, famously installed within the ancient Baths of Diocletian. Created by Philippe Benoist for Rome dans sa grandeur, the image highlights the dramatic scale and spatial harmony of one of Rome’s most unusual sacred interiors.

Benoist emphasizes the vast arches, coffered vaults, and rhythmic architectural divisions, guiding the eye deep into the space. Small figures of clergy and visitors are carefully placed to convey the immense proportions of the former Roman baths adapted for Christian worship. The restrained color palette and precise lithographic linework create a sense of calm grandeur, perfectly suited to the subject.

This plate reflects 19th-century fascination with Rome’s layered history, where antiquity and Christianity coexist within a single architectural shell. It also demonstrates Benoist’s mastery of perspective and interior light, qualities that made Rome dans sa grandeur one of the most admired visual records of the city.

The print is particularly attractive for collectors of architectural interiors and for refined interior settings where scale, symmetry, and classical order are desired.

Condition:
Very good condition. Light overall toning consistent with age. Minor spotting in margins.

Framing tips:
An elegant light mat and classical black or dark bronze frame will reinforce the architectural depth and symmetry.
