Good condition for its age with light age toning and occasional minor spotting mainly in the margins. Plate mark visible. Paper remains stable and well preserved.

About this sheet

Mount Vernon, the Virginia home of George Washington, an original steel engraving from Meyers Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany around 1854. The plate is printed in black and lettered below the image "Washington's Haus, Mount Vernon."

The mansion stands at the right on its grassy rise above the Potomac, shown from the river side with its long columned piazza and balustraded roof, a weathervane and a chimney above. At the left a stand of trees frames the view across the slope to the broad river, with a distant shore under a luminous sky with rays of light breaking through the clouds. A few visitors walk on the lawn, and a path curls up the hill at the right.

Mount Vernon was Washington's plantation and the home to which he retired after his presidency. It was a place of national interest well before the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association took on its preservation in the 1850s, and the Meyers view shows it as a landmark that German readers of the period would have known.
