Antique Amalfi Coast Print, Capuchin Convent, Italian Coastal View
A dramatic and finely executed 19th-century engraving depicting the Capuchin Convent at Amalfi, set against the rugged cliffs of the Italian coastline. This striking composition captures the monastery perched high above the sea, carved into the steep rock face and connected by winding paths and terraces that emphasize both the isolation and grandeur of the setting.
In the foreground, figures gather along the shoreline beside large sculptural rock formations, while small boats rest quietly on the water. The calm sea contrasts beautifully with the imposing cliffs, creating a powerful balance between natural and architectural elements. The convent itself stretches along the mountainside, its long façade and arcades rendered with precision, reflecting the artist’s keen eye for both detail and atmosphere.
The engraving is based on the work of W. L. Leitch, a respected British landscape artist known for his picturesque Italian views, and was engraved by J. Redaway. It was published by Fisher, Son & Co., London & Paris, a firm renowned for producing high-quality illustrated travel works in the mid-19th century. These engravings were created for an audience fascinated by the romantic landscapes of Southern Europe, particularly Italy’s celebrated coastal regions.
