It depicts the African antelope species commonly known as the bubal hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), portrayed in great anatomical detail, with the caption noting it is "sixth of the natural size" (Sisieme de la grandeur).
Miger was known for his detailed natural history engravings, and this work likely came from a larger zoological collection or atlas aimed at illustrating wildlife for scientific study and public fascination during the early 19th century.
The Antilope Bubalis, also known as the bubal hartebeest, is a species of antelope native to North Africa. Recognized for its long, slender legs and distinctive curved horns, it was once widespread across northern African plains but was driven to extinction in the wild by the early 20th century.
